What are silicones and why are they in hair care products?Silicones are synthetic polymers that are made up by a mineral combination of silicon and oxygen. When used in hair products, silicones are able to create a slippery and shiny appearance, as well as a conditioned texture due to their ability to seal off water and air. All this sounds great, right? Not so much.

Why do we keep them out? Although it may seem like silicones are giving your hair salon quality shine and a luxurious texture, they’re really setting your hair up for a dull and damaged life! Since silicone is a plastic-type substance, it’s only giving your hair the illusion of being shiny, which fades over a short period of time. What doesn’t fade is the buildup in your hair, which prevents nutrients and moisture from entering the follicle. This causes your hair to then turn lifeless, dull, and becomes a target for breakage.
